Research Fellowship Applications within the ISMB

We enthusiastically welcome the most promising early career researchers to join us via external Fellowships from funding agencies including the Wellcome Trust, UK Research and Innovation (MRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, NERC) and Cancer Research UK. 

The ISMB provides an excellent environment in which to support outstanding researchers transitioning to independence. We will provide strategic advice, mentoring and sponsorship to apply for career development fellowships. Applicants securing funding will join our close-knit interdisciplinary community, including a diverse cohort of current and former fellows.

Our research fellows make vital contributions to the ISMB. They bring novel and original research questions and approaches and new collaborative opportunities. ISMB members benefit from our outstanding research facilities, supported by expert facility teams. These include mass spectrometry, NMR, high-performance computing and cryo-EM capabilities for both molecular and in situ structure determination. Fellows hold equivalent status to other academic staff, including access to research students from a range of 4-year PhD programmes.

How to apply

Your application should be sent to either UCL or Birkbeck, according to which institution has an open call. Fellowship Panels review expressions of interest twice a year well in advance of fellowship deadlines to support candidates in joining UCL or Birkbeck. Open opportunities will be posted here.

For our current call, successful candidates will have an outstanding track record in mechanistic structural and molecular biology. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds, both from within and outside the UK.

To submit your expression of interest, please email rescomp@bbk.ac.uk by Thursday Nov 12th, 2026, as a single pdf:

  1. a short CV with names of referees,
  2. a two-page research vision/draft fellowship application;
  3. a cover letter explaining how your proposal is suitable for the fellowship scheme(s) you are interested in, a timeline for application(s), and how you see this research programme fitting into our research endeavours. 

 

The subject line for your email must be “ISMB fellowship support”.
