Research Technician in Geomicrobiology

(Ref: 1226564)

Closing date for completed applications: Tuesday 31 January 2012

A research technician is required to work in the laboratory of Dr Joanne Santini as part of an industrially-funded project with Hellenic Copper Mines Ltd (Cyprus) as the industrial partner and Dr Karen Hudson-Edwards (Birkbeck, University of London) as a collaborator. The overall aim is to understand the role of microbes in the bioleaching of chalcopyrite and to use this information to improve the process.

The position is available from 1st March 2012 and is funded for 11 months in the first instance.

We require a committed person that has at least an Honours Degree in Microbiology (or equivalent) with additional research experience. The research of the technician will cover a number of fields including microbiology and molecular biology and expertise in these areas is essential. In particular we are looking for an individual with experience in growth of fastidious microbes and a range of molecular biology skills. Theoretical and practical knowledge of environmental microbiology is essential and an understanding of geochemistry is desirable.

Postdoctoral position in structural cell biology of host-parasite interactions in malaria

(Ref: 10637) Full-time, 3-year fixed term post

Closing date for completed applications: Friday 2 December 2011

The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking a committed and creative Post-doctoral Research Assistant to join a collaborative team led by Professor Helen Saibil at Birkbeck, with Dr Mike Blackman at NIMR and Dr Roland Fleck at NIBSC, carrying out research into the molecular and cellular mechanisms of malarial egress from human red blood cells. This post, funded by the MRC, involves the application of electron tomography to study hostparasite interactions. We are applying a combination of imaging, cell biology and biochemical approaches to examine the cellular and biochemical mechanisms of parasite egress from red blood cells during the infection cycle.

Postdoctoral position in structural cell biology of Chlamydia infection

(Ref: 10636) Full-time, 3-year fixed term post

Closing date for completed applications: Friday 2 December 2011

The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking a committed and creative Post-doctoral Research Assistant to join the groups led by Professor Helen Saibil and Dr Richard Hayward carrying out collaborative research into the molecular and cellular mechanisms of Chlamydia infection. This post, funded by the Wellcome Trust, involves the application of electron tomography to study bacteria-host interactions. We are applying a combination of imaging, cell biology and biochemical approaches to examine the cellular and biochemical actions of these intracellular bacteria on their eukaryotic host cells.
