There are important differences in residency requirements and stipend for the two available studentships. Applicants should take special note of the eligibility requirements below.

Qualifications
All applicants will be required to satisfy standard UCL academic and English language entry criteria, including minimum upper-second class (2.1) honours degree (or overseas equivalent) in a relevant subject.
Residency requirements
MRC-funded studentship
Applicants should be settled in the UK, without being subject to any restriction on the period for which they may stay. Candidates who are British nationals and who have lived all their lives in the UK will automatically be eligible. Candidates who have been ordinarily resident in the UK for three years immediately prior to the start date of this PhD programme (including residence for the purpose of full time education) should also be eligible. For this studentship we are unable to fund students who do not meet the MRC student eligibility requirements.
The successful MRC-funded student will receive a tax-free maintenance stipend £15,510 per annum, and tuition fees paid in full at the home rate.
Wellcome Trust-funded studentship
Overseas applicants may apply but should note that they are eligible only to receive the maintenance stipend and tuition fees paid at the home/EU rate. Such applicants will therefore have to fund the difference in fees between the home/EU rate and the overseas rate (a difference of £13,280 per annum for 2009-10).
The successful Wellcome Trust-funded student will receive a tax-free maintenance stipend of £20,191 per annum (2009/10 rate) and tuition fees paid in full at the home/EU rate.
